At the Faculty of Humanities the BA degree is a two-subject degree consisting of a main subject studied for two years and a supplementary subject studied for one year. A further two years of study leads to the Master's degree - in Danish known as cand.mag. The cand.mag. has traditionally been the main university degree fostering upper secondary school teachers. Students may structure their BA and MA degree to be geared specifically to upper secondary school teaching. A growing number of students these days, however, choose to target their degree towards other public and private employment.

The BA and MA degree programmes consist of a number of courses within the subject studied. Each course is allocated a certain number of credits indicating the workload of the course. The University of Aarhus applies the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The ECTS is a student-centred credit system used by universities across Europe, endorsed by the European University Association and administered under the European Commission. Under the system 60 credits are equivalent to one year's full time study, 30 credits per semester. The BA thus comprises 180 credits and the MA 120 credits.

In designing their degree, students may choose between as many as 35 different subjects. Normally, the language of instruction is Danish. A growing number of degrees and courses are, however, offered in English. Additionally certain courses – mostly those related to the language disciplines are offered in German, Spanish, French etc. For English taught degrees and courses please see our International Course Catalogue
